Pray Maker Council

I’m a freelance writer living in central Jersey, with my 11-year-old son, Coleman, and my dog Sheena. As to religious affiliation, well, I have none.  But I would venture to guess that the silent majority of Americans would probably define themselves as I do: spiritual seeker. The reason I wanted to be a PrayMaker is that the arc of my journey has led me inexorably back to prayer, over and over.  Ten years ago, when my father died, I saw a sign near the hospital that spoke to me directly:  “Rough Road.”  An hour later, I headed home, in tears, and realized the sign was no longer there.  I took it as a “sign” that even though this would be a hard time for me, it would not last forever.  Starting to wonder if there is Someone, Something we can turn to in our darkest hour, I returned to praying as I had done in my youth. I embrace prayer as a connection to the sacred, a kind of mission statement or map of where I’d like to be in life.  My own personal prayer is:  thank You for my purpose, my passion, my partner, my people, my portable peace…  We all need some kind of compass in the world, somewhere to hang our hat, and for me, prayer has been a part of that equation. I don’t use litanies or mantras in prayer, don’t clasp my hands but feel that even the declaration of an intention is a prayer. Peace.
