I’m not an expert on religion. I never went to divinity school and no one would mistake me for a biblical scholar. My only academic credentials would be taking a class in comparative religion, freshman year of college at University of Illinois. Let’s see… that would be in 1974, so I’m a little rusty.
But, I love praying and believe in the power of prayer. I see the change prayer has made in my life and the contentment I feel when I pray. Today I ask the question, why do you pray?
Philosophers, sages and teachers have grand theories about prayer and write brilliantly about the subject. One says; if you start to philosophize about prayer, you won't pray. Another says; the very essence of prayer is the experience of being together with and talking to God. Speaking words is technique and not prayer itself. To a point I agree with both. And yet, I do think about and discuss prayer and I do need beautiful words of inspiration for me to feel more deeply when I pray. Why do you pray? Please let me know. I want to hear from you.
The Reason
Prayer is a gift I give myself.
I turn to You,
because then I am not alone.
You can bear them.
I give You my thanks:
You grant me all my needs.
I give You my praise:
You give me more to admire.
I get more than I can ever give.
And that is why I pray.
