In this Mourning

Prayers - Memorial Prayer

In this Mourning

in-this-mourning-prayerThe hardest part was standing vigil,
shaking clammy hands,
kissing mascara-strewn cheeks,
all of us trying to find words of comfort.
Help me feel the warmth
in every covered dish and bouquet of carnations.
Platitudes and pat answers don't help me.
The only thing I seek is Your presence.
All I ask of my friends is to be there.
Mourning passes as life goes on
in slow motion, their absence palpable,
but I find comfort in the time we had.
Grant me strength in my sorrow,
and bring my loved one home into your eternal care.

A Mother's Memory

Prayers - Memorial Prayer

A Mother's Memory

Wedding bells. Plans. Happiness.WAMothersMemory
Ultrasounds and doppler scans.
Why did she die?

Pink booties. Scented candles.
Musical mobile.
Lace curtains and nursery furniture.
Why did she die?

Drab days.Vacant stare.
Meaningless existence.
Endless days and infinite emptiness.
Why did she die?

Please, I don't want Your
Comfort. Reassurance. Sympathy.
I just want You to know
Will we meet again?

Mother's Love

Prayers - Memorial Prayer

Mother's Love

WMothersLove150x225
I am not a babe, child, or teen
and yet the sweet, sweet softness
and love of my mother
overwhelms me at times.
She is gone from this tired earth,
but never from my presence.
I often feel her around,
in the flutter of a butterfly
that lands on my arm;
tickling my tresses on a windless day;
standing beside me in the kitchen,
making her infamous breakfasts.
I know my mother is with You.
I am blessed and we are never alone.

Canine Connection

Prayers - Memorial Prayer

Canine Connection

WCanineConnection

The truth is he picked me out.
Lots of dogs to choose from,
but his eyes said,
"We belong together."

Sitting in my lap,
a resident of my heart.
He gives me more
than I ever knew I needed.
My comforter,
licking tears away.
My caretaker,
never leaving my side when I'm sick.
My best friend always,
he gives me unconditional love.

My Mother, My Self

Prayers - Memorial Prayer

My Mother, My Self

WMy-MotherMySelf117x175
Nobody loves you like your mother.
Fussing with your hat, doling out superfluous advice:
"Stand up straight!" "Look both ways!"
Putting up with our selective amnesia
as we forget to bring home our report card—again.

I want to know her back story,
what she gave up for me.
Help me understand the woman she was.
Allow me to dream her dreams,
the ones she put on a shelf so I could fly.
She wanted so much more for me than she ever had.
