The Final Walk

WFinalWalk225x150
It is time.
She looks at me
with love and pain
in her big brown eyes.
It is time.

Oh, help me to
not run away from here,
to not run away from
bringing her to You.

The needle nestles into her leg, without a sound.
She does not whimper or even twinge.
Her last breath will emerge upon a steel table.
Her furry form cloaked inside my old robe,
her favorite piece of home.

My shaking arms embrace her now bony frame.
Her brown eyes, trusting gaze into mine,
searing our years of joy, love, laughter and family
-our forever bond.

I kiss her forehead and lift her face.
I need Your help to stay strong,
to see her through.
Her lashes, so long and sweet
her life, too short, so sweet.

I whisper my lasting love into her fuzzy ear,
my goodbye until we meet again,
"Mommy loves you, see you soon."
Her tail swishes
one
last
time.
