In My Own Words
Thank you for accepting my words, for opening Your arms
to the sloppy child I am,
my voice tripping and stuttering
over a limited vocabulary,
a warped perspective,
an inconsistent temperament.
Please help me accept
that Your holiness is here to cover me,
that I am not expected to bring my own
or to impress you
with an eloquence that implies spiritual genius.
Rather, let me bring myself to You
just as I am— open, honest,
ready to find true brilliance in You.

Mystics find meaning in the minutiae of our daily doings,
but I've never found divine inspiration as I tail my dog,
scooping poopsicles in the snow.
Moms always say, "Better out than in!"
but I lose my temper as I stand out here,
dodging landmines, grumbling
that I'm on scooper patrol again.
Curtail this canine's colon
so I can finally get off “doodie duty.”
Then again, it's a big, fluffy blessing
to have a loving pooch who protects the household.
All he asks in return is a healthy meal,
a public poop, and a good night's rest.
So many times I hear myself scoff.“There’s no way that can be true.
Too easy. Too nice. I’m no one’s mark.”
Help me see that when I harden my heart,
I close myself off to those around me,
to the possibilities of tomorrow, and to You.
Give me the strength to open myself
to the heart ache that accompanies compassion,
to the tired-to-the-bone feeling
that comes from hard work.
Food on the table.Heat for the winter months.
A decent day's wage.
Restful sleep, all the way through the night.
Please provide for us the basic human necessities.
And then, something more:
Larger dreams, broader connections.
A cause to commit to.
Friends on the same wavelength.
Quality of life and a deeper meaning.
Answers to mysteries.
A way to be useful.
Setting the table with extra places.
An open heart to whatever life may send my way.
Bless us with life in all its glory.
Miracle Grow
This part is the tilling of fallow ground. The careful cultivation of the soil of my soul.
What feels like a crisis grows into crowning glory.
What looks like too much to bear
is really just enough to bear fruit.
You've brought me through so many things,
I sometimes forget the miracles You've already granted.
When I look at the field as it stands, it's disheartening.
Improve my vision so I see the crop
even before it breaks ground.
Bring my dreams to bear just as You farm the fields:
ripe, ready, and always right on time.
