Prayer Power

Here’s why I am a terrible activist: I’m overly open-minded. Whenever I try to rally around a cause, I end up seeing both sides of the issue.

Advocacy may be effective — or not — but my prayers stand the test of time. I’ve learned there is no one correct solution to complicated government problems. And there’s no one leader who can make change happen overnight.

But with prayer, there is one perfect leader. When I’m in prayer, it’s me and my Creator. I have no worries about being swayed with new evidence, unintended consequences or well-articulated talking points. I pray for guidance, strength and blessings of peace. After prayer, I know I’ve done what’s right to set the world right.

Don’t get me wrong; I’m not suggesting that prayer alone will change political will. We’re blessed to have the freedom to speak out, vote and lobby our lawmakers. It’s a good idea to stay informed, and it’s even OK to be wishy-washy on the issues, like me. My advice is to use the power of prayer to affect the powers-that-be.

Beginning

I'm beginning to understand
that in silence I am drawn to You,
that my unanswered questions
may cause me to seek You more,
know You more, trust You more.

I'm beginning to grasp
the significance of pain in my life,
that my heartache
may cause me to understand
Your children more,
love them more, support them more.

I'm beginning to develop eyes
to see Your unnoticed blessings
that sustain me and cause me to
acknowledge You more,
speak with You more, honor You more.
I'm beginning to end with You.
