Her grandson Jonathan called and told his Grandma that he was coming to visit. This was a very big deal. Jonathan was her only grandchild whose visits were rare.
“Jonathan, I’m at 808 Lakeview Terrace. You can take the Howard train and get off at the Simpson stop. Find the major cross street, Ellyn, take a right, you’re going east and walk four blocks to Keeler avenue, turn left and walk three more short city blocks to Lakeview Terrace. Go left, and you’ll see my building on the right, it’s yellow, a 5 story high-rise, that’s 808 Lakeview Terrace. Are you writing this down? Did you get that?”
“Yes, grandma, I got it. Howard train to Simpson. I look for Ellyn street, go right, four blocks to Keeler. I turn left and walk three blocks to Lakeview Terrace, turn left and walk until I see your building on the right. The tall yellow one, 808 Lakeview Terrace.”
“Good boy. Listen carefully. I am in apartment 510. There is a big panel at the door. Use your elbow to push button 510. I will buzz you in. Come inside, the elevator is on the right. Get in, and with your elbow, hit floor 5. When you get out, look for the apartment, 510. It will be on your left. With your elbow, hit my doorbell”.
“Thanks, Grandma, I get it, but why do I need to hit all those buttons with my elbow?”
“Sweetheart, I know you would never come to see your dear grandma empty-handed.”
