It was a time in history when there was horrendous cruelty and ethnic cleansing.
One particularly vicious beating was going on in the town square. The man was being whipped by a sadistic soldier who took direct aim with ferocious strokes, all the while grinning with pleasure every time the whip tore off more flesh from the poor man’s back.
“Thank God,” the man would say each time he received another powerful lash of the whip.
Finally, the tormenter paused the beating.
“Are you insane?” He asked with a sneer. “Why are you thanking God for a beating?”
“I’m not thanking God for the beating.” He replied, “I’m thanking God that I’m not like you.”
