A bus was stuck in traffic that had come to a standstill. It was 5:20 p.m., and the passengers were anxious to get home after a long day at work.
There was a demonstration, a protest of some kind, that was holding up traffic in every which way.
People started complaining. One woman’s voice could be heard louder than others.
“I’m sick of this.” She said. “What’s going on?” she persisted, growing more and more agitated. A schoolgirl who sat next to her was trying to calm the lady down, but she wasn’t having it. The unhappy woman’s ranting and raving kept escalating.
“I haven’t eaten all day. How long are we going to be here? How long are we expected to wait?”
The student surveyed the situation out the window and began tapping away on her phone. Soon she got up and went to talk to the bus driver. She whispered something in the driver’s ear; he nodded, opened the bus door, and the girl got off.
She was out for only minutes after successfully navigating through the protesters on her short-distance errand.
When she climbed back on the bus, she was carrying a stack of pizzas and a bag of soft drinks.
She started with her seatmate and passed out all the treats to grateful passengers.
Within seconds, the mood on the bus changed dramatically. People were smiling, talking to one another, and enjoying themselves.
Especially the woman who had started the commotion, now calm, grateful, and smiling ear to ear.
One unexpected kindness made an impact on every person on the bus that day.
Imagine the opportunities that await us to turn a bad situation into something good, wholesome, and holy.
