It was a time in history when a cruel military General came to power, and he had no tolerance for religion among the people he conquered.
One day, a Lieutenant of the General’s soldiers and his regiment came to a God-fearing village. They ordered everyone to gather in the town square.
“Who is the leader of the town?” asked the Lieutenant.
A soft-spoken man stepped forward. “I am the spiritual leader of this village; these are my people.”
“Spiritual?!” He spat on the ground. “Do you think you and these people are special to your God? Do you believe your precious God will protect you?”
He took his rifle and shoved it into the man’s chest. “How about now?”
The righteous leader took the blow and continued to look the evildoer in the eyes.
This enraged the Lieutenant, who hit him again harder. He continued to beat the man relentlessly until the poor man could not stand.
He hovered over the broken righteous man as his followers looked on in horror.
“What about now? What does your God think about you now? What has this God done to help you?”
The righteous man looked up and said, “Our God is proud and happy that I am not the one beating an innocent man.”
And so the Lieutenant and his regiment learned a lesson about God from the soft-spoken man whose spirit could not be beaten.
