Antoinette felt unappreciated at work. Others were getting promoted faster, her paycheck was less than it should be, and words of encouragement from the higher-ups were sparse.
On one particularly dreary morning, she woke up with a burst of determination. Before she even got out of bed, she turned to her husband, Tim, and said,
“I’m going into work today, and I’m going to walk right over to the boss’s office and tell her how I feel. And I’m going to ask for a raise.”
Tim said, “You deserve it, Toni, and I’m sure you’ll get what you’re asking for.”
When Antoinette got home that night, she walked into a house decorated with balloons that said “Congratulations!”
Tim was in the kitchen cooking dinner, and the table was set in celebration mode with their good china and even a small floral centerpiece.
“How did you know?!!” a surprised Antoinette asked. She hadn’t told her husband about the successful meeting with her boss.
Tim explained, “I just knew your boss would see what I see; a strong, capable, and confident woman who is a valuable employee. How could she not honor you with a raise and a promotion?
At the end of the night, as she was getting ready for bed, she saw an envelope on the floor in the closet that fell out of Tim’s jacket. Antoinette picked it up. She read the card inside and smiled.
Dear Toni, Tonight we celebrate you. It doesn’t matter if your boss is unwilling to give you the acknowledgment you earned. It’s not important if there isn’t a larger paycheck at the end of the week. What matters is how very special you are. Tonight I congratulate you for always being a woman of valor, honor, and worth. Love, Tim.
